Duff McKagan’s recent championing of the new Alice in Chains album got us all nostalgic for another of the great Seattle bands of yesteryear, Mother Love Bone. July 19th marked the 19th anniversary of the band’s first — and unfortunately, only — album Apple. Four months before Apple was released, lead singer Andrew Wood died at the age of 24 following a heroin overdose.
Although the above VHS copy of MLB’s beautiful “Chloe Dancer/Crown of Thorns” from the 1989 Bumbershoot festival seems to be disintegrating before our very eyes — it’s the only live version of the song on YouTube — in the bleeding colors you can still make out bassist Jeff Ament and guitarist Stone Gossard, who of course would later lay the foundation for Pearl Jam. Apple and Temple of the Dog’s one-off album tribute to Wood remain some of the great vestiges of Seattle’s glory years in music.
