Jay-Z, Lady Gaga Join Green Day, Taylor Swift as VMAs Performers

Jay-Z and Lady Gaga have both been added as performers for this year’s MTV Video Music Awards, invading New York’s Radio City Music Hall on Sunday, September 13th. The pair will join previously announced performers Green Day, Taylor Swift, Muse and Pink at the event. Lady Gaga is tied with Beyonce, Mrs. Jay-Z, for the most nominations, with both singers capturing nine Moonman nods apiece. “I’m simply gutted to be both a performer and nominee at the 2009 VMAs. In fact, I’m so happy, I could die,” Gaga said in a statement.

For Jay-Z, his VMA performance will come two days after the release of his new album The Blueprint 3. Jigga has already revealed that he’ll be joined by “Run This City” guests Rihanna and Kanye West on the debut episode of The Jay Leno Show, so we can’t help but wonder if Jay has a similar surprise in store for his VMA appearance. Nelly Furtado was also added to the show’s ever-growing list of stars, but the singer will instead serve as presenter instead of performer. Gossip Girl’s Leighton Meester and iCarly’s Miranda Cosgrove will also present at the VMAs, joining the previously announced Chace Crawford, Katy Perry and Ne-Yo.

As Rock Daily reported, British comic and Forgetting Sarah Marshall star Russell Brand will once again serve as the VMAs’ host after courting controversy at the event last year. One of the many questions remaining is will Britney Spears, nominated for seven awards, appear or perform at the VMAs. Brit’s Circus tour schedule conveniently has a three-day gap between a September 12th show in North Dakota and a September 15th concert in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
