Flashback: Weezer’s Rivers Cuomo Bottles Up Down Under

The last time Weezer featured in a Flashback, we thought it was rambunctious Alternative Nation host Kennedy that stunned Cuomo into silence, but it turns out back in the mid-1990s, Rivers just didn’t like giving interviews all that much. This time around, on a Pinkerton promotional tour in 1996, Cuomo blames his uneasiness on the show Recovery on jetlag, having flown to Australia from Los Angeles. Of course, the host doesn’t really endear himself to Cuomo by accidentally calling him “River” instead of “Rivers.” Making matters worse, the host then calls him “River Weezer” and a man in a black hoodie comes out of nowhere to hand Cuomo some yellow flowers. It’s Joaquin Phoenix-level awkwardness throughout.
