More details have emerged regarding the shocking, sudden death of Adam “DJ AM” Goldstein, who was found dead in his New York apartment August 28th. Friends first became concerned that something was wrong when AM missed his flight from New York to Las Vegas, where he was booked to perform his weekly set at the Palms Hotel’s Rain nightclub, People reports. Goldstein sent his last text message to two friends at roughly 1 a.m. Friday morning regarding the Vegas performance. (The Palms, in tribute to Goldstein, blacked out the “P,” “L” and “S” on their sign so that it simply read “AM.”)

As Rock Daily previously reported, after the NYPD broke down the door, police found Goldstein dead in bed, with a crack pipe and prescription pills nearby. According to People, a half bag of crack cocaine was also recovered from Goldstein’s apartment. There were no signs of foul play, and an initial autopsy yielded inconclusive results. A toxicology report will take several weeks.

After more than a decade of clean living, DJ AM reportedly developed a dependency to prescriptions like Xanax and benzodiazepines last year while recovering from the jet crash he and Travis Barker survived. According to TMZ, while the Xanax was used to calm Goldstein’s post-traumatic stress after the crash, the benzodiazepines are what set off AM’s relapse. TMZ adds that AM’s relapse was recent and that it had “nothing to do with AM’s breakup” with girlfriend Hayley Wood. AM’s death is also reportedly considered an accidental overdose and not a suicide.
