U2 Unveil “I’ll Go Crazy If I Don’t Go Crazy Tonight” Animated Video

U2 have revealed the animated video for “I’ll Go Crazy If I Don’t Go Crazy Tonight,” the third single off of their five-star No Line on the Horizon and the song Bono sings in BlackBerry ads popping up before many of this summer’s biggest movies. U2 don’t actually appear in the video, but the clip’s incredible animation more than makes up for the absence of the Edge.

The video was animated by artist David O’Reilly, who previously worked on the films Son of Rambow and Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy as a collaboration with art collective Shynola (who earlier this week brought us the stunning stop-animation video for Coldplay’s “Strawberry Swing”).

The clip starts out harrowing like any Disney movie, except instead of the parent of a cartoon animal dying, there are transparent animated characters realizing that they’re living meaningless lives. The Robert Altman-esque ensemble of cartoon characters all have the realization that if they go crazy if they don’t go crazy tonight, so they all “decide to make a change in their lives,” as the U2 official YouTube page explains.

As Rock Daily recently reported, U2 kicked off their 360 Tour — featuring their massive stage setup nicknamed by some “the Claw” (the band refers to it as “the spaceship” — with a concert in Barcelona that included both a Michael Jackson tribute and a live feed to astronauts orbiting Earth in a space station. Bono and Co., who have begun Twittering from behind the scenes, bring their 360 Tour to the States on September 12th when the band visits Chicago’s Soldier Field.
