Sonic Youth have canceled their October 4th performance at this year’s Austin City Limits festival because guitarist Lee Ranaldo is out of action with a fractured wrist. The injury will require The Eternal band to postpone five dates on their upcoming Southwest tour from this month to January 2010. Sonic Youth’s Santa Barbara, California show on September 26th was also nixed. “Lee fractured his wrist while playing tennis. Please join us in wishing him a quick and thorough recovery,” the band wrote on their official Website. Ranaldo, another victim of the U.S. Open fever that has swept over New York in recent days.

The rest of 2009 promises to be busy for Sonic Youth, so we wish Renaldo a speedy recovery as well. October finds SY touring Berlin, Brussels, Paris and London, while November brings visits to Sao Paolo, Brazil and New England before the band flies back to the U.K. for All Tomorrow’s Parties. In between, Sonic Youth will make their Gossip Girl debut when they perform EVOL’s “Starpower” on the Hottest Show on Television’s October 12th upcoming episode.

Sonic Youth joins the Beastie Boys as the second iconic New York band to have their Austin City Limits appearance axed this year following a band member’s injury/illness. As Rolling Stone previously reported, the Beasties were forced to cancel all their festival performances this year as Adam “MCA” Yauch is recovering from cancer. The Beastie Boys were replaced by the Yeah Yeah Yeahs at both ACL and Lollapalooza.
