Flashback: Beck Performs With Charlotte Gainsbourg’s Mom

Exactly a month from today marks the 10th anniversary of Beck’s Paisley Park-inspired classic Midnite Vultures. In our effort to find a Flashback video worthy of the album’s tenth birthday, we stumbled upon the above clip — recorded for the French program Nulle Part Ailleurs on April 1st, 2000 — of Beck performing “L’Anamour” with actress Jane Birkin, the cover girl who played the title character on Serge Gainsbourg’s Histoire de Melody Nelson. Beck’s Sea Change was heavily inspired by Melody Nelson and, bringing the above performance full circle, as Rolling Stone previously reported, Beck has now collaborated with Serge and Jane’s daughter Charlotte Gainsbourg on her upcoming album IRM.
