Flashback: A Look Back at the Great John Hughes

In honor of cult ’80s director John Hughes, this week’s Flashback takes us back to 1966 by way of 1986, with that classic scene from Pretty in Pink where Otis Redding’s famed rendition of “Try A Little Tenderness” is lip-synched to dramatic effect by Duckie, played by Jon Cryer. Unlike films like The Breakfast Club and Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, both directed by Hughes, films like Pretty in Pink and National Lampoon’s Vacation were solely written by Hughes, but his ingenious sense of selecting the perfect song to soundtrack any moment is one of the many reasons why Hughes—despite a small directorial oeuvre—will forever be considered the auteur of the teen flick genre.
