Twenty years ago, New York duo They Might Be Giants unleashed an album that would become a hallmark of geek-chic rock. Flood was their third LP, and the record that would cement their reputation as wacky pop culture enthusiasts with mind-tickling lyrics and an off-kilter rhythmic sensibility. John Flansburgh and John Linnell are currently on the road celebrating Flood’s milestone with full-album gigs, and they look back at the writing and recording of the album — explaining how “Hot Cha!” features drumming on Flansburgh’s kitchen sink and “Your Racist Friend” includes a trumpet solo by Dizzie Gillespie sideman Charlie Sepulveda — in an exclusive track-by-track guide for RS.
