Earlier this month, Chris Cornell told Rolling Stone that his former band Soundgarden had been talking about the release of B sides and a possible box set — but not the reunion many fans have been hoping for since the group’s 1997 split. Now the band’s influential guitarist, Kim Thayil, is breaking his silence and opening up to RS about the treasure trove of unreleased material the band still has in the vaults — “Summation,” which Thayil describes as “a pretty heavy song in 5/4 time” and the “trippy” “Ocean Fronts — as well as the story behind the Soundgarden mini-reunion (with Tad on vocals) and his favorite of the band’s releases.
