Jay-Z, “99 Problems” [Light Year Remix]
It’s unlikely that Jay will opt for this disco re-structuring of this Black Album classic at his headlining slot at All Points West tonight but, hey, who knows? Remember that one time when My Bloody Valentine played that all-bluegrass set?  That was weird.

Katy Perry, “Waking Up in Vegas” [Calvin Harris Remix]
OK, so the big problem with this Calvin Harris remix of Katy Perry’s recent chart-topper is that it makes the lyrics jump out — which is never a good look for Perry. But when the sleek track properly kicks in, it’s a tidy little dance number, its LED synths perfectly suited to Perry’s polished pout.

Eminem feat. Mariah Carey, “The Warning” [Mariah Carey Dis Track]
Well, this is certainly shaping up to be one of the weirdest feuds of the last few years. The beat is menacing and Em’s flow is as fiery and unhinged as ever — but then couple of bars he says Mariah’s name, and you realize all over again how goofy and petty and ridiculous this whole thing is.

Beerjacket, “Dancing in the Dark” [Bruce Springsteen Cover]
Sometimes simple is best: Scottish troubador Beerjacket makes Born in the USA-era Bruce sound like Devils and Dust era Bruce, stripping “Dancing” down to a few plucked chords and its timeless aching melody.

Survivor, “Eye of the Tiger” [Oh Sh*t! & Mynx Cover]
Oh shit is right — L.A. production team turns the survivor classic into something by Daft Punk, a furious, punchy, quasi-techno track with mechanized vocals. This is what is going to be playing in that inevitible YouTube clip where someone re-does every Rocky fight with Rock ‘Em Sock ‘Em Robots.
