- The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame announced a 25th anniversary bash: a two-night concert at New York’s Madison Square Garden featuring Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band, U2, Simon & Garfunkel, Metallica, Aretha Franklin, Eric Clapton and more.
- The Beastie Boys announced a brief hiatus due to Adam “MCA” Yauch’s “very treatable” parotid gland cancer. Also, Eddie Van Halen underwent hand surgery and Jane’s Addiction bowed out of their Australian tour due to drummer Stephen Perkins’s infected elbow.
- Jay-Z recruited Rihanna and Kanye West for his new Blueprint 3 single “Run This Town,” revealed collaborations with MGMT and Drake and booked a headlining gig at All Points West. Also, Whitney Houston gave NYC a preview of her comeback album while Madonna unveiled plans for her Celebration best-of compilation.
- Paul McCartney brought Beatlemania back to Flushing, Queens, at the Mets’ new Citi Field, Mötley Crüe rocked Dr. Feelgood at the Crüe Fest 2 launch, Limp Bizkit made their U.S. return with a Las Vegas gig, Tool entranced at the Mile High Festival, Dr. John and the Ponderosa Stomp brought New Orleans to New York and Slayer at the Mayhem Fest still has our ears ringing.
- In the investigation into the death of Michael Jackson, authorities raided Dr. Conrad Murray’s Houston offices.
