Thom Yorke’s new single “Feeling Pulled Apart By Horses” b/w “The Hollow Earth” was released today, September 21st, as a digital download for fans who pre-ordered the limited printing of the 12” single. A video for “The Hollow Earth,” directed by Raymond Harmon and featuring “subliminal imagery” by graffiti artist Banksy, was also unveiled this weekend, though Yorke was not involved with the clip. As Rolling Stone previously theorized, “Feeling Pulled Apart By Horses” is an updated version of a Radiohead song that started appearing in their live shows around 2001, originally titled “Reckoner” (and not to be confused with the completely different song called “Reckoner” that appears on their 2007 album In Rainbows). While the live version featured one of the loudest and most sinister riffs in Radiohead’s catalog, Yorke’s final version of the song is more subdued and textural, recorded in the style of his 2006 solo album The Eraser. The “radical rework” of the song also omits the original version’s chorus, which simply feature the word “Reckoner.” The track features Radiohead guitarist Jonny Greenwood, while the band’s longtime producer Nigel Godrich produced both songs.
As for B-side “The Hollow Earth,” Yorke wrote that the song was “a bass menace that was born out of The Eraser period but needed a little more time.” Yorke predicted that the single will be downloadable to the masses starting around October 6th. The question remaining: Will either of these songs be Yorke’s contribution to Twilight sequel New Moon’s soundtrack? Clocking in at six-and-a-half minutes, “Pulled Apart By Horses” seems the perfect length for an end credits sequence, while “The Hollow Earth” seems like a pretty Twilight-y song title.
