Decoding Lollapalooza’s “Wheel of Fortune” Lineup Puzzle: Strokes, Soundgarden, Phoenix, More

This year’s big summer festivals haven’t been to content to simply announce their lineups, insisting instead on finding inventive ways to get fans amped to hit the road. Bonnaroo used the better part of an entire day virally unveiling their slate of artists one-by-one, and now Lollapalooza is employing an even more creative, Wheel of Fortune way to hint at their own roster before the official announcement on April 6th. The Lollapalooza site has posted this year’s lineup Hangman-style, with the number of letters and words correlating with the band’s names. So far, only the “O” has been revealed, but based on the evidence we have so far, we’re certain about at least 10 of the bands that will perform at Chicago’s Grant Park the weekend of August 6th through 8th.

Look back at Lolla ’09’s best live shots.

At the top, it appears as though the reunited Soundgarden, Phoenix and the Strokes will be among the six headliners at Lollapalooza thanks to some strategically placed Os, while rumors of Green Day, Lady Gaga and Arcade Fire also headlining appear to be true given the number of letters and words in the artist names. (Lolla could throw a curve ball and reveal the blank “five letter-three letter” artist is Pearl Jam and not Green Day, but we doubt that after seeing Green Day’s summer tour dates.)

The placement of Os also all but confirm appearances by Spoon, Hot Chip, Devo, the New Pornographers, Gogol Bordello and the National. Down toward the bottom of the bill, we’ve also figured out the Morning Benders fit amid the blank spaces. Check out the puzzle over at the Lollapalooza site and be sure to leave your educated guesses in our comments section.
