Last week, Rolling Stone took you behind Number One film Where the Wild Things Are with an exclusive look at the making of the movie’s unique score and photos that traced the evolution of the monsters from illustration to their big-screen realization.
Now the movie’s co-screenwriter Dave Eggers is opening up about adapting Maurice Sendak’s classic 1963 children’s book for director Spike Jonze’s picture, as well as for a novelization of the story called The Wild Things. “I think as a culture we’ve gotten a lot more prone to overprotecting kids from any risk, disappointment, fear or threat,” Eggers says of the critique that the film is too dark for its target audience — kids. “But when kids write their own stories, they are always full of all of those things: death and decapitation and disappointment and treachery. Even at three, four, five years old. I think a lot of parents have forgotten these things.”
