“IRM,” the title track from Charlotte Gainsbourg’s collaboration with Beck, is available now as a free download at the French singer’s official Website. Gainsbourg recruited Beck to produce IRM, sensing that the pair share an offbeat and experimental musical perspective. The collaboration lasted for a year and a half, and Beck wound up producing the entire album, composing all the music and even co-writing the lyrics. You got to give the prolific Beck credit: with his Music Club, hilarious interviews, reinterpretation of Modern Guilt and everything else going on at his fun-filled official Website, he still found time to help out a fellow artist.

“I pulled a bunch of songs out. And then I wrote a few, with her in mind, but when we spent time together they changed because I got more of a feeling of where she wanted to go,” Beck said of working with Gainsbourg in a statement. “We got in the studio and I could see all the possibilities.” Musically, “IRM” drips Beck, mirroring his adventurous and bouncy approach to song construction, but it’s not until the song’s final moments do we actually hear the Modern Guilt man’s voice harmonizing in the layered background.

IRM will be released at some point in January 2010, with the first single “Heaven Can Wait,” a duet between Gainsbourg and Beck that Charlotte describes as “a classical pop song,” expected soon. IRM will also feature contributions from Beck’s band of drummers Joey Waronker (who’s been playing with Thom Yorke in Los Angeles) and James Gadson on drums, Brian LeBarton on keyboards, David Ralicke on trumpet and Beck’s father, David Campbell, on string arrangements. Gainsbourg, Serge’s daughter, last released 5:55 in 2006.
