April 5th, 2010
Photo: Boster/AFP/Getty Dr. Conrad Murray, Michael Jackson’s personal physician who was charged with involuntary manslaughter for the King of Pop’s death, faced the judge that will oversee his trial and several members of the Jackson family — the star’s parents Joe and Katherine as well as siblings Janet, Jermaine and Randy — at a preliminary hearing at a Los Angeles courthouse today. Jakob Dylan Performs With Neko Case, Talks “Women & Country”

April 5th, 2010
Last week, Jakob Dylan dropped by the RS offices to preview tunes from his new disc, Women & Country, a collection of country-roots ballads that address love and American life in times of economic and political uncertainty. He also came prepped with some A-list backup, bringing along singers Neko Case and Kelly Hogan to perform three tunes, including the gorgeous ballad “Nothing but the Whole Wide World” (watch it above). For Women & Country, Dylan ...

Day of “Reckoning”: Celebrate 30 Years of R.E.M.

April 5th, 2010
Photo:Roberts /Redferns Thirty years ago today, a fledgling unnamed band of University of Georgia kids performed their very first concert at a friend’s birthday party. That date was April 5th, 1980, that band was eventually called R.E.M. Fast forward three decades and 14 albums later, and R.E.M. have gone from college radio darlings to mainstream rock fixtures to Rock and Roll Hall of Famers. Over on the R.E.M. HQ official site, the band is presenting a ...

Readers’ Rock List: The Clash

April 5th, 2010
Photo: Wilmer/Redferns Last week, before the Clash of the Titans remake shattered Easter weekend box office records — much to the chagrin of Rolling Stone’s Peter Travers — we asked for your favorite songs by a far superior Clash. The votes ranged from The Clash classics to Combat Rock, but “London Calling” captured the reader vote, beating “Train in Vain,” “Rock the Casbah” and the M.I.A.-sampled “Straight to Hell”: 1. “London Calling” 2. “Train in Vain” 3. “Straight ...

Thom Yorke Opener Flying Lotus Says Gig Arrived in Psychic Dream

April 5th, 2010
Photo: Pickles/WireImageWhen Radiohead’s Thom Yorke kicks off his U.S. tour with solo band Atoms for Peace tonight in New York, he’ll have a very star-crossed opening act: Los Angeles electronic music producer Flying Lotus, who makes textured beat-scapes that skitter and skip with a brain-tickling, psychedelic flow. Born Steven Ellison, nephew to jazz pianist Alice Coltrane, “FlyLo” tells Rolling Stone he and Yorke are something of “astral brothers” — they share the same birthday, October ...

Dr. Dre Drops “Detox” News at the Red Sox Opening Day Game

April 5th, 2010
Baseball season began with some potentially major music news yesterday: Dr. Dre’s oft-delayed Detox may finally be on the way. That tidbit comes courtesy of last night’s Red Sox vs. Yankees game at Boston’s Fenway Park, where Dre and record exec Jimmy Iovine were promoting a Red Sox edition of the Beats By Dre headphones. Last week, an image of Dr. Dre and Jay-Z together in the recording studio emerged, and in the pregame interview ...

Bob Dylan Cancels Asian Tour After China Blocks Concerts

April 5th, 2010
Photo: Steinfeldt/Michael Ochs Archives/Getty Bob Dylan’s reputation as a counterculture icon has led to the cancellation of his first-ever concerts in China and ultimately forced the legend to call off his tour of Southeast Asia. After completing a 14-date trek through Japan and a show in Seoul, South Korea, last month, Dylan was hoping to extend his tour and perform shows in Beijing and Shanghai, which would have marked his debut shows in China. However, ...
