December 4th, 2009
Photo: Kravitz/FilmMagic Beyoncé and Taylor Swift picked up the most nominations for the 2010 Grammys, including nods in all three big categories. RS went backstage at the nominations concert, and broke down the 2010 Grammys’ most intriguing storylines. Let us know which LP was overlooked for Album of the Year. Adam Lambert pledged to “focus on music” after his controversial AMAs performance, but ABC still nixed two more appearances because of “FCC heat.” Glambert’s LP debuted ...

Weekend Rock List: Album Snubbed By The Grammys

December 4th, 2009
The nominees for the 2010 Album of the Year Grammy were announced earlier this week and, as our readers have made loud and clear, the 2010 nominees were maybe a little light on the rock and/or roll music. Taylor Swift, Beyoncé, Lady Gaga, Black Eyed Peas and Dave Matthews Band are fine nominees — but what LPs do you think are maybe more deserving of a nod? Tell us in our comment section and on ...

Flashback: Happy 40th Birthday, Jay-Z!

December 4th, 2009
The man himself said “30 is the new 20″ on Kingdom Come and now he’s officially going to have to rewrite those lyrics. Old enough to retire a second time, Jay-Z is celebrating his 40th birthday today — feel free to relive the moment via his mom’s intro on The Black Album’s “December 4.” Although he’s barely old enough to run for president, Jay-Z is a veteran among hip-hop veterans, recording since rap’s golden age ...

Fricke’s Picks: Harvey Scales’ Funk

December 4th, 2009
Two of my favorite supersoul tracks of 1967 came on the same single by Wisconsin’s Harvey Scales and the Seven Sounds: “Get Down,” a high-speed-James Brown blast that got to Number 79 on Billboard, and its hot-ardor flip, “Love-Itis,” later covered by the J. Geils Band. New collection Love-Itis (Soul-Tay-Shus) has ‘em both with a dance party’s worth of obscure pulverizing follow-ups, including “Broadway Freeze,” “Trackdown,” “The Yolk” and the improbably wicked “Funky Football.”

December 4th, 2009
Photograph by Ethan Russell courtesy of Let It Bleed This Sunday, December 6th, marks the 40th anniversary of an event Rolling Stone called “Rock & Roll’s Worst Day”: The Altamont Speedway Free Festival in California. Taking place just four months after the triumph of Woodstock, Altamont featured the complete opposite of “peace and love.” Hell’s Angels hired as security for a rumored $500 infamously got into altercations with the crowd, resulting in a homicide captured ...

Chris Brown Tells “20/20″ Rihanna Cried After Hearing “Changed Man”

December 4th, 2009
Photo: Boyd/Michael Ochs Archive/Getty In an interview airing tonight on ABC’s 20/20, Chris Brown reveals that his apologetic track “Changed Man” made Rihanna cry after he played it for her just one month after their February 8th altercation in Los Angeles. Rihanna had previously denied ever hearing the song, but Brown admits to ABC News’ Robin Roberts, “I played the song for her… the day I did it… a month after the situation. She called ...

December 4th, 2009
Photo: Harrison/Getty Drake has lined up Jay-Z, Young Jeezy and “Forever” co-stars Kanye West and Lil Wayne to appear on his much-anticipated debut album Thank Me Later, the rapper told MTV News. Backstage at Wednesday’s Grammy Nominations Concert, the MC told Rolling Stone, “My album is slated to come out in March. I’m still working on the album, but they might try to move it up.” Even without releasing a full album, Rolling Stone’s 2009 Artist to ...

Single Minded: Lil Wayne Remixes, Fugazi’s Stage Banter, The Bravery Covers Fleet Foxes

December 4th, 2009
Photo: Legato/FilmMagic Fugazi, Stage Banter [Stage Banter] So, let’s be clear about something: Single Minded loves Fugazi. Loves. And hearing this stage banter — charming, confrontational, aggressive, passionate — just reminds us of all the reasons why. Clare & the Reasons, “That’s All” [Genesis Cover] This rules: Brooklyn chamber-pop crew Clare & the Reasons give “That’s All” the “Tusk” treatment, tricking it out with tubas and making it sound slinky and sinister. The Bravery, “White Winter Hymnal” [Fleet Foxes ...

Lil Wayne’s Taps “Scarface” Soundtrack for Leaked “Rebirth” Track “On Fire”

December 4th, 2009
Photo: Venema/WireImage After a long history of delays and postponed release dates, it’s appearing more likely that Lil Wayne’s rock-rap LP Rebirth might actually be released on December 21st as “On Fire,” another new song reportedly destined for the album, leaked out yesterday, December 3rd. As opposed to the nu-metal-flavored cuts that were emerging earlier in the year, “On Fire” finds Weezy dropping Auto-Tuned rhymes over the synth sounds of Giorgio Morodor, heavily utilizing the ...
