Readers’ Rock List: Time Songs
October 26th, 2009
Photo: Michael Ochs Archive/Getty Last week, inspired by Adam Lambert’s new single “Time for Miracles,” we asked for your favorite songs that deal with time. Pink Floyd’s Dark Side of the Moon centerpiece “Time” was predictably victorious, edging out tracks by Prince, Nine Inch Nails and the Rolling Stones. As for Lambert, he surprisingly didn’t make the cut. Check out the Readers’ list below:
1. Pink Floyd – “Time”
2. Bob Dylan – “The Times They Are a-Changin’”
3. Coldplay – ...

When the Rolling Stones returned to the U.S. for a 1972 tour, they let photographer Robert Frank bring a crew of film cameras along for the ride with the intention of releasing an honest, behind-the-scenes look at a big band’s life on the road. The final cut was a bit more raw than the band had bargained for, though: When Mick Jagger and Co. watched Cocksucker Blues they decided they never ...
Eno, Lanois Talk “Unforgettable Fire” as U2 Reissue Arrives
October 26th, 2009
With the 25th anniversary reissue of U2’s The Unforgettable Fire due out tomorrow, the album’s producers Brian Eno and Daniel Lanois spoke with Pitchfork about working on the band’s much-anticipated follow-up to War. At the time, the move was a risky one for both artist and producers: U2 were coming off a hit album, and while Eno had worked on a handful of Talking Heads records, he was in an ambient frame of mind when ...
Fricke’s Picks: A Latin-Rock Classic
October 26th, 2009
Louie and the Lovers didn’t come from out of nowhere; it just seemed that way. A band of Mexican-Americans from Salinas, California, singer-guitarist-songwriter Louie Ortega, singer-guitarist Frank Paredes, bassist Steve Vargas and drummer Albert Parra quietly issued one of 1970’s best non-hit singles — “I Know You Know,” a bolt of spangled jangle and smooth garage-soul harmonies that Greil Marcus called, in these pages, “perfect music to wake up to” — and then one of ...

October 26th, 2009
The Strokes have reportedly run into a “disagreement” while working on new tracks for their fourth album, the follow-up to 2006’s First Impressions of Earth. Frontman Julian Casablancas gave a progress report to the U.K.’s Sun (via the Quietus), in which he admitted the paper there’s a lack of consensus between the bandmembers as to whether “the songs are ready.”
“I’m somewhere in the middle,” Casablancas said of the Strokes’ creative rift. “The problem is ...

3OH!3 Soak Katy Perry in New “Starstrukk” Video
October 26th, 2009
The video for the remixed version of 3OH!3’s “Starstrukk,” featuring Katy Perry, premiered this morning over at MTV. In the clip, the Boulder, Colorado duo get lustily swarmed by women after they raid the coins in a wishing fountain before Perry joins the fun by showing up for the chorus. There’s homages to James Bond films and West Side Story — and, of course, Baywatch, the series that revolutionized slow-motion running. Plus, Perry get doused ...
Them Crooked Vultures Unleash First Single “New Fang,” Add Dates
October 26th, 2009
Them Crooked Vultures have unveiled the studio version of “New Fang,” the first single off their self-titled debut album, over at twt.fm today. The supergroup — Queens of the Stone Age’s Josh Homme, Foo Fighters’ Dave Grohl and Led Zeppelin’s John Paul Jones — blend the heavy, jammy and psychedelic influences of their respective bands, and with Homme on lead vocals, “New Fang” sounds like it wouldn’t be out of place on a Queens of ...
Weezer Riff Like Metal Gods, Party With a Hip-Hop Star at Tour Launch
October 26th, 2009
Photo: Flanigan/FilmMagicRivers Cuomo loves his job. It wasn’t always so for the Weezer frontman, who was visibly wary of the spotlight in his earliest days on the Los Angeles music scene, even after he became a consistent craftsman of modern rock. But just weeks ahead of their newest album, Raditude, Weezer delivered a high-energy concert of flash and warmth at the Hollywood Palladium Saturday night, emerging onstage in resplendent white, hooded track suits, equal parts ...
