Mary Travers, who with Paul Stookey and Peter Yarrow performed some of the most enduring folk anthems of the 1960s as Peter, Paul and Mary, has died at age 72. Her spokeswoman, Heather Lylis, told the AP the cause was complications from leukemia, and that Travers passed away at Danbury Hospital in Connecticut today. The singer had undergone a bone marrow transplant and was “feeling fabulous” in 2006, but her condition deteriorated this year and ...

New Music Report: The Drums, Plus Yo La Tengo

September 16th, 2009
In this week’s roundup of the best new releases, Kevin O’Donnell breaks down the debut EP from the Drums, one of indie-rock’s biggest buzz bands this fall. Summertime delivers spiky post-punk and super-catchy songs about surfing and going to the beach, kind of like an upbeat Cure. Plus, there’s Yo La Tengo’s Popular Songs, one of their best and most diverse albums yet. The Hoboken, New Jersey trio break out delicate ballads, ghostly pastorals and ...

September 16th, 2009
Photo: Walter/Getty It might not seem like Devo have much in common with Madonna and Jay-Z, but thanks to a new deal with Warner Bros. Records, the Akron, Ohio outfit have joined the big leagues with a 360 deal. In a move that finds an ahead-of-its-time band signing what could be considered an ahead-of-its-time contract, WB will handle all facets of Devo’s merchandising, touring, endorsing and more in 2010, when the band returns with a ...

Wanye Coyne ShamWows Us With Flaming Lips’ Furry “Embryonic”

September 16th, 2009
Right after All Tomorrow’s Parties, Flaming Lips leader Wayne Coyne channeled his inner pitchman and recorded an infomercial for one of the furrier packaging options the band is exploring for their upcoming double album Embryonic, which comes out “sometime in the second week of October,” Coyne says. (Psst… Wayne, it’s out October 13th.) While the pelt-heavy packaging makes it seem like copies of Embryonic should be accompanied by a rabies shot, Coyne insists the fur ...

America’s Got Talent announced recently that Britain’s Got Talent sensation Susan Boyle will take the stage at the season finale to perform “Wild Horses,” a cover that will also appear on her debut album I Dreamed a Dream. Boyle joins a long list ...

Breaking: The Entrance Band

September 16th, 2009
Who: Los Angeles-based trio the Entrance Brand craft sprawling, virtuosic psychedelic rock that has earned them big-ups from Sonic Youth’s Thurston Moore, who signed the crew to his Ecstatic Peace label. Sound: Frontman Guy Blakeslee spews wailing, guitar-heavy thunder as bandmates Paz Lenchantin and drummer Derek James keep the stoner-metal grooves chugging along nicely on epic tracks like “Grim Reaper Blues, Pt. 2,” where Blakeslee shrieks and howls like a young Robert Plant. “We have these ...

September 16th, 2009
Photo: Mazur/WireImage After a record-breaking run in Australia, Pink imported her Funhouse tour to the States, bringing a show filled with razzle-dazzle, covers and stunts to Seattle’s Key Arena last night. Early on, she announced she had separated her shoulder, but was so excited about the performance she didn’t consider canceling, adding, “And the louder you cheer the less pain I feel!” Perhaps as a result, she stayed on terra firma during “Sober” (in contrast to ...
