American Idol hired Ellen DeGeneres. The show’s insiders (and Paula Abdul) wished Ellen the best while the record industry greeted the announcement by filing a lawsuit against DeGeneres’ talk show.
We caught Jay-Z celebrating the release of Blueprint 3 in NYC, the last ever Nine Inch Nails concert in ...
Rolling Stone at the VMAs: Look Back at Our Best Coverage and Get Ready for 2009’s Big Show
September 11th, 2009
The Grammys may be the music industry’s official biggest night, but MTV’s Video Music Awards have become the biz’s craziest scene. From eye-popping onstage pairings (Britney and Madonna, anyone?) to Nirvana’s flying bass knockout to an army of Slim Shady look-alikes to Russell Brand’s potty mouth, the VMAs always deliver something worth talking about — and as usual, Rolling Stone will be all over the show Sunday night. We’ll be bringing you a live blog, ...

September 11th, 2009
This week, 9.9.09 finally arrived and if you’re like us, you’ve spent the majority of your free time listening to both the studio and mono remasters of the Beatles catalog from With the Beatles to Abbey Road over and over again. (That is, when we weren’t playing The Beatles: Rock Band.) Now that we’re all finally hearing the Fab Four on compact disc like the band likely intended, this week’s Rock List is dedicated to ...

Two LAPD officers have been placed on leave following an internal investigation into how a photograph of a battered Rihanna from her February 8th altercation with Chris Brown somehow fell into the hands of gossip site TMZ.com, the Los Angeles Times reports. Sources identify the two officers as nine-year vet Rebecca M. Reyes and rookie officer Blanca Lopez, who was a roommate of Reyes. No charges have yet been filed in the case. The ...
Weezer Nab “National Geographic” Dog Photo for “Raditude” Cover
September 11th, 2009
Is this image sufficiently “rad” or boast enough “attitude” to be deemed worthy of Weezer’s new album cover? Rivers Cuomo evidently votes yes. According to Spinner, who debuted the cover, the singer-guitarist spotted the reader-submitted photo in an issue of National Geographic, got in touch with the guy who snapped it, and discovered the dog — Sidney — “is a big Weezer fan.”
There you have it, folks! We’ve heard crazier stories behind album covers (and ...
Flashback: The Wu-Tang Clan Bring da Ruckus in 1996
September 11th, 2009
A significant piece of news has been lost in the sea of buzz about The Blueprint 3, the Beatles remasters and Ellen DeGeneres joining American Idol: Raekwon’s Only Built 4 Cuban Linx II, the sequel to the Wu member’s 1995 hip-hop classic, has sat atop the iTunes Top Albums chart for the better part of the week (Jay-Z finally usurped it, but it was an impressive run). To celebrate the release of the incredible OB4CL2, ...

September 11th, 2009

A handful of the biggest record labels welcomed new American Idol judge Ellen DeGeneres into the music biz with an unpleasant gift: They sued her daytime talkie The Ellen DeGeneres Show over copyrights. According to Billboard.biz, the labels allege that Ellen’s show has broadcast over 1,000 songs during the “dance over” segment of the show — when Ellen dances through the audience while moving from stage to stage — without ever paying for the ...
“Fame Kills Starring Kanye West and Lady Gaga” Tour: First Dates
September 11th, 2009
Photo: Strauss/WireImageThe first four dates of Kanye West and Lady Gaga’s joint “Fame Kills” tour were announced on Lady-Gaga.net. We’re assuming these are the first four confirmed dates and not the first four actual dates, since the first show revealed is November 18th in Sacramento and the fourth show is in Dallas in January 24th, so either the full itinerary will fill in the gaps or you can expect this tour to wrap up by ...
