New Music Report: Serengeti

August 26th, 2009
This week in the New Music Report, Rolling Stone contributing editor Christian Hoard presents a new segment of “Christian Rock,” where Hoard shines the spotlight on one of his latest favorite under-the-radar artists that have nothing to do with Christian music (yes, we read the comments). This week, Hoard focuses on Chicago rapper Serengeti, an ultra-prolific rapper — 12 albums in the past three-and-a-half years — who makes rapping about his native city an art ...

Target Teams With iTunes For Pearl Jam’s “Backspacer” Digital Release

August 26th, 2009
In June, news broke that Target stores had secured the exclusive big-box retail rights for Pearl Jam’s upcoming album Backspacer. But while Walmart has its own digital music store and Best Buy owns Napster, Target doesn’t have a notable digital music presence. To level the playing field, Target and iTunes announced yesterday that the two vendors will team up for a new Target-exclusive section on the iTunes Music Store, Billboard.biz reports. Fittingly, the first album ...

Britney Spears Gets Into Russell Brand’s Head in VMAs Commercial

August 26th, 2009
Last year Britney Spears, British comic Russell Brand and the, uh, elephant in the room starred in a series of amusing ads for MTV’s Video Music Awards. This year two of the three promise to return — Brand as host, Spears as seven-time nominee — and the pair are appearing in a cheeky non-West Side Story-themed promo advertising the September 13th event. Britney’s even in a bikini, but not the same one she wore to ...

Them Crooked Vultures Continue to Rock Europe, Plot Secret Gig

August 26th, 2009
Them Crooked Vultures continue to randomly pop up for performances in Europe, and video from the new supergroup’s concerts continue to be Americans’ only method of hearing the band’s music (save for their post-Lollapalooza gig in Chicago that marked their live debut). Up top we have “Caligulove,” another new track from Queens of the Stone Age’s Josh Homme, Foo Fighters’ Dave Grohl and Led Zeppelin bassist John Paul Jones. As opposed to the propulsive driving ...
