Les Paul Remembered: Guitar Greats on Their True Hero

August 13th, 2009
Photo: Capak/WireImage As word spread of the death of guitar pioneer Les Paul today, many of those he influenced jumped online (and called up Rolling Stone) to share their tributes to the father of the electric six-string. The next issue will have more tributes, but here’s a survey of artists’ immediate reactions to the loss of one of the instruments’ true heroes: Look back at Paul’s life in photos: Jimmy Page, Eddie Van Halen and more stars ...

Flaming Lips Unleash “See the Leaves,” “Embryonic” Album Cover

August 13th, 2009
Photo: Metcalfe/Getty “See the Leaves,” another new song from the Flaming Lips‘ 12th album Embryonic, hit the Internet today, courtesy of Pitchfork. With its sinister groove, ear-piercing guitar squeals and Wayne Coyne’s lyrics about dead leaves and a trying sun, the song is one of the Yoshimi gang’s darkest tracks in a while, and that’s coming from a band that turned the line “Do you realize that everyone you know someday will die” into a pop ...

Gibson CEO Remembers Les Paul, “The Father of the Modern Guitar”

August 13th, 2009
Photo: Walter/WireImage When news broke of guitar legend Les Paul’s death, Henry Juszkiewicz, the CEO of Gibson Guitars (which has been associated with the Les Paul model guitar since 1952), offered to reflect upon the man who was a groundbreaker in creating the electric guitar. “Most people, when they think of Les Paul, they think about the guitar. Which is the most popular guitar — certainly in the Gibson line, and probably in the world. But ...

Hype Monitor: Girl in a Coma, Zaza, The Big Pink

August 13th, 2009
The Band: Girl in a Coma The Buzz: San Antonio rock trio combine roaring riffs with sugary vocals. They’ve also got a knack for impressing their elders: Morrissey hand-selected them to open for him during his 2007 tour, and they impressed prima punker Joan Jett so much she signed them to her Blackheart Records. Listen If: You’ve spent your life trying to imagine a middle ground between “Bad Reputation” and “The Boy with the Thorn in His ...

Paramore Rock Out in the Dark For “Ignorance” Video

August 13th, 2009
Photo: Flanigan/FilmMagic If you suffer from claustrophobia, you may want to avoid watching the new video for Paramore’s “Ignorance” below. Instead, maybe you should perhaps pay respect to Les Paul or go listen to that new Radiohead song. “Ignorance” finds frontwoman Hayley Williams and her cohorts stuffed into a space that makes a panic room look like a mansion, performing in near-darkness save for one dangling light bulb that Hayley grasps like a microphone. As Rock Daily ...

Steely Dan Wrap Beacon Theatre Stand With “Gaucho” Gig

August 13th, 2009
Photo: Ach/WireImage Last night Donald Fagan and Walter Becker got dressed, walked down the street and made a little lucre playing the most cynical music ever. The event was the final night of Steely Dan’s long stand at New York’s Beacon Theatre. They’ve been here since July playing the final three records of their early career — 1976’s Royal Scam, 1977’s Aja, and Gaucho, an album so stinky with ’70s jaundice it came out in ...

August 13th, 2009
Photo: Busacca/WireImage Sources close to the investigation into the death of Michael Jackson tell the Los Angeles Times the star’s personal physician, Dr. Conrad Murray, left Jackson alone in his bedroom after administering the powerful sedative Propofol the morning of Jackson’s death. The report indicates Murray felt comfortable leaving Jackson alone after administering the anesthetic as an insomnia treatment — and that Murray had given Jackson the drug repeatedly while under his employ — but when ...
