July 29th, 2009
As Music Steve and his gang of naked female friends revealed in what appears to be the latest piece of viral Guitar Hero 5 marketing, Nirvana’s “Smells Like Teen Spirit” is finally coming to the GH franchise, bringing along with it Queen & David Bowie’s “Under Pressure,” Dire Straits’ “Sultans of Swing,” the Raconteurs’ “Steady As She Goes” and 11 more tracks to round out the massive and eclectic GH5 on-disc 85-song track list. New Music Report: Mos Def’s “The Ecstatic”

July 29th, 2009
Christian Hoard’s “Christian Rock” pick in this week’s New Music Report is the latest album from rapper Mos Def, The Ecstatic. Mos Def has been making rap records for more than a decade, but his latest is definitely his best since 2004’s The New Danger, Hoard says. There are upbeat songs and soulful tracks, but the overall sound is arty and grimy and the LP plays like a mixtape. Madlib produced several tracks including “Auditorium,” ...

Megadeth’s Dave Mustaine Talks New Riffs, Old Drama

July 29th, 2009
Who really wrote the legendary bassline to “Peace Sells” and why is there an AK-47 firing on a song off Megadeth’s new album Endgame? Singer-guitarist Dave Mustaine spills all in a new interview with Rolling Stone. Mustaine talks about the punishing riffs on the band’s latest LP (due September 15th), why he stretched his wings on Risk and whether Metallica had plans to fire Lars Ulrich (as far as he knows, that is), plus weighs ...

Cory Chisel’s “Born Again” With the Raconteurs: Exclusive Debut

July 29th, 2009
Cory Chisel was born and raised in Wisconsin, and his band the Wandering Sons’ hearty folk-rock emanates the might and dust of American grit. So it makes sense a handful of bluesy vets show up on their September 29th debut Death Won’t Send a Letter — My Morning Jacket’s Carl Broemel as well as the Raconteurs’ Jack Lawrence, Brendon Benson and Patrick Keeler. The latter pair also make appearances in the video for “Born Again,” ...

Clarkson, Beyonce Song Similarity Dust-Up Draws Tedder Reaction

July 29th, 2009
Photo: Pimentel/WireImage(Clarkson), Lovekin/Getty(Tedder), Warner/WireImage(Beyonce) OneRepublic’s Ryan Tedder is speaking out about Kelly Clarkson’s claims that her new single “Already Gone” is built on the same backing track as Beyoncé’s “Halo.” Tedder released a statement acknowledging that he penned both tracks, but arguing they are “entirely different songs conceptually, melodically and lyrically,”MJ’s Big Blog reports. As Rock Daily wrote yesterday, Clarkson lobbied against releasing All I Ever Wanted’s “Already Gone” as a single because of the ...

July 29th, 2009
Photo: COP/FilmMagicInvestigators in the death of Michael Jackson raided the Las Vegas home and offices of Jackson’s personal physician Dr. Conrad Murray yesterday in search of information pertaining to the roughly 19 aliases Jackson used when dealing with doctors, the Los Angeles Times reports. As Rolling Stone wrote in our look at Jackson’s final days, the most frequent alias Jackson used was that of Omar Arnold, but the L.A. Times writes that according to yesterday’s ...

Breaking: Those Darlins

July 29th, 2009
Who: Those Darlins — guitarist Jessi, bassist Kelley and baritone ukulele player Nikki — met at the Southern Girls Rock and Roll Camp, a summer youth program founded by Kelley in Murfreesboro, Tennessee. The trio quickly bonded over their burgeoning love of classic country music and cut their teeth playing standards by the Carter Family and Hank Williams. “We would play with more traditional bands that were trying to do the whole revival thing, [but] ...

On the Charts: Demi Lovato Leads Debuts, Jackson Still Sells Strong

July 29th, 2009
Photo: Grant/WireImage The Big News: Michael Jackson once again topped the Comprehensive Albums charts as Number Ones sold another 151,000 copies, almost 50,000 more than the Top 200’s champ, Demi Lovato’s Here We Go Again (read the review here). Those two albums were the only ones to crack 100K as we enter the summer sales doldrums, a release schedule bereft of any big ticket releases until perhaps Jay-Z’s Blueprint 3 on September 11th. For Lovato, Here ...
